What do you want to be remembered for?
Ever ask yourself this question?
Last week, I had one of my favorite interviews to date — for the inaugural edition of Soulful Business Magazine.
SBM’s mission is to help entrepreneurs follow their soul calling, connect with their tribe and run a profitable business. Exactly the kind of topics I love to discuss.
So, I was super excited to participate.
I loved the interview and topic of course — but also how relaxed it was, with thought provoking questions from the co-founders — Nerida and Mark.
Two questions in particular really struck me:
- What do you want to be remembered for?
- What do you want your legacy to be?
Great questions, eh?
While these questions are quite common on retreats or new-year planning — they’re not usual questions for interviews, or daily conversations.
But they matter, hugely.
Because they help us pause for a moment, and reflect on what is most important to us.
Because they help us connect to, or begin to formulate what our purpose is, and how we want to live our lives.
And…how much more meaningful and soul-nourishing could our work and life be, if we thought about these questions regularly?
For ME, TOO.
So, I wanted to share the same questions with you, plus one more:
- What do you want to be remembered for?
- What do you want your legacy to be?
- When you pass, what do you want people to say about you?
In one of my new-favorite movies, The Fault in Our Stars (anyone else just seen this heart-wrenching, and incredibly touching movie?), the main characters have different views on the purpose of life. Augustus wants to leave a legacy to be remembered by and Hazel wants to matter to just a few people that she loves the most.
I totally get both desires — and think we can absolutely do both, and not at the expense of the other.
We can leave a positive impact on the world, be loved AND have the people we’re closest to feel loved and cherished.
What do you think?
What do you want for your life?
Now, legacy can feel like a big word, but I don’t necessarily mean something hugely grandiose (unless that is what you want).
Instead, think about the things that would make you feel like you had lived a well-lived life.
Not what anyone else thinks – but the things that would make you feel satisfied, happy and proud of your own life.
If that still feels too big, and you’re not sure where to start, simply ask yourself how you want to be remembered in these 3 areas:
- Business / Career
- Personal Life
- Passions / Hobbies
Here are mine:
BUSINESS/CAREER:
I want to be remembered for helping people create a business and life that they adore, and that works. To experience a life full of purpose, joy, inspiration and love. To inspire people to follow their passions, center their business around what they love, make great money, a difference in the world, AND have great health and relationships.
PERSONAL LIFE:
I want people to feel encouraged, inspired and empowered when they interact with me — that they can achieve their dreams, that they are enough. That they have their own unique gifts + brilliancy to offer the world, and that they are beautiful, capable and strong.
PASSIONS/INTERESTS:
I want to be remembered for helping people who don’t think they can dance. Experience the absolute joy of dancing and letting go, without worrying about steps or what they look like — and to take that joy and inhibition into their daily life. And for those that already dance, to have access to dance classes that bring them joy, connection, self-confidence and energy to create the life they desire.
These are important questions to ask ourselves regularly.
And the best thing is that these 3 questions directly link to (or help us figure out) our purpose – and how to create a life that matters to us, our planet and our loved ones.
Now it’s your turn…
Over to You:
- What do you want to be remembered for?
- When you pass, what do you want people to say about you?
- What can you do today to connect with your purpose in your business, personal life or passion?
- Does this feel important to you to do and why?

Absolutely loved doing the interview with you and Mark, Nerida. Looking so forward to the Soulful Business Magazine launch! Carmen xo
I want to be remembered as someone who cared for others and treated everyone equal.
As a teacher and now continuous learner i treat people fairly and watch them grow as they
interact with new learnings.
Legacy is to have all my family and their friends see the value of true health and gain financial freedom.
I hope people say that “health is so important and we will follow in her footsteps.”
This is beautiful Helene! Really loved reading this. Thank you so much for sharing – I know others will gain inspiration from you words! Carmen xo
